SGA CAMPER - ASHLEY LANTES
2/10/2009
Hi Coach Carr,
I know you may not remember me, but I am Ashely Lantes and I was in two of your SGA summer programs last summer (Clermont, FL and Atlanta, GA). I have a question, I am having difficulty in my goalkeeping skills when it comes to crosses. This has been a weakness of mine for a long time and I have been trying all year to fix it before college. I have gotten better, but still not good enough (missing easy balls, over the head... etc.). Are there any drills you know of that could help me with some of the aspects of crosses? I would greatly appreciate any advice you have.
Thank you,
Ashley Lantes

Ashley!
So glad you emailed me, I was just thinking about you the other day and how your playing was going. Crosses is usually the hardest thing for most goalkeepers your age, so don't get too frustrated. Couple of key points to keep in mind: Start a little behind your halfway point in the goal and keep your weight balanced or even a little bit on your back foot. This will keep you from making that wrong step forward. Also make sure your feet are in a 3/4 open stance. This will allow you to drop step and open up for balls lofted over your head. One drill that I love is to put two goals in the shape of an "L" so that one is on the goal line and the other is lined up near the back post facing the sideline. The striker hits in balls and the keeper must protect both goals (forcing you to gett off your line at least 8 feet and not allow the ball over your head). Let me know if you have any questions about it and let me know how you are doing.
Coach Carr

Coach Carr,
Thank you so much! I did the drill you gave me during my practices and followed your advice, and I can already tell a difference with me and crosses! I am getting to more and getting to the balls faster! Thank you for the help! I really appreciate it! I signed on Wednesday to go and play at Florida Atlantic University!!!! I can't wait, August can't come fast enough! I will be doing SGA camp again this summer, I can't wait! I know it is going to prepare me for college! Thanks again for the advice and help. I greatly appreciate it!
