I think that’s the first impact SGA has had on me: when someone is “better” than you, don’t give up, learn from them and work harder. I’d like to think that I knew this already, but I don’t think I believed it until I saw other people who were around my skill level. Being elite in a group of mediocre players is easy. Being elite in a group of elite players is much harder. Realizing the difference is even harder than that and SGA, in a way, taught me how.

The second thing SGA has really taught me is how to deal with other keepers. I always believed in constructive criticism, but getting others to buy into it is a much harder thing, especially when we’re competing for a spot. The whole, “I’ll help you, you’ll help me,” dynamic is not something you usually find on girl teams, but when I would encourage the other keepers to focus on the next ball, give advice, or offer condolences on a goal, they would end up doing the same. I’m pretty sure the leadership/confidence I started to develop at SGA also helped here. Eventually we got to a point where I didn’t need to initiate the comments for us to critique each other and all of us got better as a result. This carried over from practice into games. Us keepers were always supportive of whoever went in and were the loudest voices from the bench, minus our coach. We also ended up being the closest group of friends on the team.

I guess I really wanted to tell you that, in case you were wondering, SGA works and works well. I absolutely love the program and hope you continue to do good things with it. I honestly don’t know what I would be doing if it weren’t for that week of “NOW!” every year. What will I do this summer?!

Thanks for your time and everything else,

Deanna Amoia
